Inhabited since Palaeolithic, during the Bronze Age was inhabited by Messapi. With the installation of the nearby Greek colony of Taranto and Metaponto, the plain ginosina domain was contested by two major polls. In Roman times Ginosa was important for three reasons: 1) its proximity to the Via Appia that made her a sort of military fort; 2) its plan, which in the hands of few landowners, formed a solid granary for Rome; 3) organizational capacity in procurement of the Roman army.
